Bandhani is one of India’s oldest textile arts, dating back to the Indus Valley era.
The word comes from Bandh to tie. Fabric is tied into thousands of tiny knots, dyed by hand, and when the threads are opened, a masterpiece of dots, patterns and emotions appears.
Jamnagar Bandhej is known for its finer, smaller dots and intricate patterns, resulting in designs that often feature figurative motifs like elephants and peacocks.
Kutch Bandhej is recognized for its bold, larger dots and simpler, more traditional geometric and striped patterns.
How Bandhni Comes to Life
1. Pure Fabric Fine cotton, silk or georgette is washed and prepared for tie.
2. Mark & Tie Tiny portions of cloth are pinched and tied with thread. Each knot is tied by hand.
3. Dye Magic The fabric is dipped in vibrant dyes. For multi-colour designs, it’s tied and dyed again.
4. The Reveal Threads are opened to reveal delicate patterns.
